Delegate Young Visits with AFT Healthcare-Maryland

Following the legislative session in Annapolis, state lawmakers have an opportunity to walk the streets in their districts to get an on-the-ground sense of just what is going on. For Delegate Pat Young, that meant a visit to Spring Grove Hospital Center. He sat down for a candid conversation with members of AFT Healthcare-Maryland and AFSCME. The wide-ranging discussion provided members an opportunity to express their frustrations and concerns to an elected official who has their interests at heart.

Del. Young listened as members told stories about being understaffed, assaults on workers, and a need for better compensation. As a delegate in his second term, he is well-positioned to use his committee hearings as an opportunity to get labor and management on the same page. Nurses in AFT Healthcare-Maryland ultimately want to serve the citizens of the state. Now more than ever, mental health professionals are vital to the health and welfare of Marylanders. Our members need safe working conditions so they can best serve residents, and Del. Young offered himself as a help to that end.

He listened and engaged thoughtfully on what he could do to help with some of the issues at Spring Grove. He also encouraged members and union officials to be present during hearings with the Maryland Department of Health so legislators can get a more complete picture, one from management and one from workers on the front lines.
