Members Lobby Night

The AFT Healthcare-Maryland and the Maryland Professional Employees Council (MPEC) locals were in Annapolis on Monday, March 20th to once again lobby delegates and senators on important issues affecting state workers. The membership turned out in an effort to be their own advocates on important issues. The lobbying efforts, the third such one organized by AFT Healthcare-Maryland and MPEC this season, kept important state worker issues at the forefront of legislators’ minds. Members addressed lawmakers on everything from addressing PIN attrition and COLA increases to workplace safety and conditions, as well as retirement plans for state workers.

With less than a month remaining in the legislative session, the unions and AFT-Maryland have been working tirelessly to lobby for and shepherd passage of key legislation. Events like lobby nights, our legislative reception, and testimony before the House of Delegates and state Senate committees have been impactful in addressing the legislative priorities of the unions. AFT Healthcare-Maryland and MPEC have also been leaders among the AFL-CIO family on how to most effectively lobby the state legislature. The organization and advocacy examples set by the unions have modeled the way for a number of other unions that make up the Central Labor Council.
