Member Spotlight: Lisa Oelfke

Meet Lisa Oelfke. She is a Health Policy Analyst in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She is also a member of AFT Healthcare-Maryland, and has been for the last five years.

Day to day, she analyzes healthcare policies and issues, all in an effort to improve medical assistance programs that serve some of the most vulnerable Marylanders. This job also sees her do instrumental work with the Maryland Health Connection (Maryland’s health care exchange developed as a result of the Affordable Care Act). The work she and her colleagues do has not gone unnoticed. Her office received the Team Innovation Award from Secretary Van T. Mitchell for their work improving the Health Benefits Exchange.

Beyond being a state employee, Lisa is also an active and engaged union member. She is proud of her role in the union because she believes state workers need representation for the best possible work environment and fair practices. She appreciates AFT Healthcare-Maryland’s presence at her workplace because it has provided workers a needed voice to improve workplace conditions. It is an organized entity at the worksite that allows workers to have a voice and ensures their issues are considered. One such issue that she believes the union could work to improve is having more family friendly leave policies. Lisa feels these would greatly benefit the community and strengthen family structure.

If all of that wasn’t enough, she also is the Baltimore Volunteer Leader of the Marylanders for Clinton campaign.
